The purpose of a facial cleanser is to remove the build-up of dirt, oils, makeup, sunscreen, pollution, and dead skin cells. It is the first step of every skin care routine and aids in unclogging pores and cleaning the skin without stripping our skin's top layer. Cleansing should happen twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening, however we sometimes need to take into consideration the type of skin and what exactly are you cleansing off i.e., makeup, sunscreen, etc.

There are different forms of cleansers, each one benefiting a different skin type. The two main cleansers that you will commonly come across are:

Gel Cleansers: these cleansers tend to be clear, have a gel-like consistency, and once emulsified between the hands with water it begins to foam! They are designed for medium/deep cleansing and are effective at decongesting clogged pores, removing excess oils, and killing acne causing bacteria. Gel cleansers are best for those with acne or oily prone skin.

Cream Cleansers: cream cleansers tend to have a very creamy texture - as the name suggests! They are much more gentler on the skin and are much more hydrating than other cleansers, making them perfect for anyone with dry or sensitive skin! Cream cleansers gently cleanse the skin without stripping it of its natural oils, and make a great second-step cleanser if you’re into double cleansing!

Exfoliating is an essential step in your skin care routine! Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin. Within a 4–6-week cycle, your skin sheds old cells to make place for younger, newer skin cells. However, occasionally your skin just performs a lousy job at shedding, leaving some dead skin cells behind. This might block the pores in your skin and leave it feeling/looking flaky and dry. It is recommended that you exfoliate 1-2 times per week, the type of exfoliant you use is always dependant on the type of skin you have.

Exfoliators are generally classified into two categories, a chemical exfoliator which uses acids (AHAs/BHAs) or enzymes to remove dead skin cells, and a physical exfoliator (granules, seeds, machinery, etc.) which utilises hard substances to manually remove dead skin cells.

The skin around our eyes is thinner than the skin on our face, making it more prone to being damaged by environmental irritants like UV rays, and developing fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet due to constant movement such as blinking and facial expressions. Additionally, the sebum (oil), a natural moisturiser, is less abundant around the eyes causing them to become dry and flaky. Eye creams are specifically formulated with hydrating and repairing ingredients to target ageing and other environmental damages.

Serums contain extra active molecules that penetrate the skin's surface for maximum effectiveness, and because of the increased concentration, it usually takes less time to see real results. Because serums are lighter and deliver active ingredients to the skin more quickly, they are applied first, after cleansing the skin.

To maximise the serum's benefits, you must also seal it, which is why a moisturiser or face cream is the next step. A serum is the secret weapon for treating skin problems such as fine lines, acne, dullness, or pigmentation, while a moisturiser is the sealer that hydrates your skin.

It is recommended that you use a serum both morning and night after cleansing the skin.

A moisturiser is a product that helps retain moisture in the skin. Moisturisers can be gels, oils, lotions, and creams! It is essential to choose a moisturiser that suits your clients skin the most, continue reading to know the different types of moisturisers you'll come across within the Panemorfi line.

Gels have the highest water content and are usually oil-free, making them a good moisturiser for those with oily skin. Due to its lightweight formula, gels offer an oil-free hydration without compromising the benefits of its ingredients, whilst avoiding the film or greasy feeling you would usually get using a heavy moisturiser or cream.

Moisturising gels are ideal for a hot summers’ day, or for those with oily skin!

Moisturising lotions are lighter than creams but richer and heavier than gels, making them ideal for people with dry or combination skin or those who live in dry, cool climates. Lotions absorb quickly without leaving a 'film' on the skin, making them an excellent choice for daytime use under makeup. A moisturising lotion, like a moisturising gel, is less likely to clog pores, making it ideal for those with oily skin.

Most lotions address skin issues such as wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and other signs of ageing, making them useful for anyone with sensitive skin.

A cream is the thickest and richest of all the moisturisers, which softens, heals, and protects the skin. Creams also act as treatments and will have a diverse range of benefits depending on the product and the ingredients within that product.

It is important to understand a client’s skin type to ensure the right product is going onto the right skin. Unlike gels and lotions, moisturising creams tend to leave a thin ‘film’ on the skin, this acts as a protective skin barrier and locks in the moisture keeping the skin hydrated and healthy.

SPF is short for "sun protection factor," which is used to measure the protection from the sun's UV Rays. For instance, when you see SPF 15 it means it blocks out 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks out 97%, and SPF 50 filters out 98%. It is always highly recommended to stay between 30 and 50 SPF for better protection! More times than often, skin care brands will have sunscreens that contain nourishing ingredients that feed the skin and provide some extra coverage.

No matter if it is a rainy day or a scorching hot day, sunscreen should always be applied before leaving the house!

Face Masks are a great addition to your clients skin care routine as their main purpose is to target specific skin concerns such as scarring, pigmentation, dehydration, acne, dull skin, open pores, etc.
